January 16th

New and upcoming artist JGatsby (one of the artists of duo Fez2, who remixed AWOL Nation’s “Sail” some of you might have downloaded and listened to in one of WGOF’s first posts) has just released a new dubstep song.   Different from his regular tech-house vibe, JGatsby brings a more industrial sound to dubstep and manages to bring something new to the dubstep genre that is quickly reaching a creative slump.  While dubstep songs with vocals tend to be too “pop-ey”, JGatsby artfully balances the use of vocals (by Rattle Box), dark beats typical of dubstep, and a fresh new industrial sound.

Catch this new song (up for free download at JGatsby’s Soundcloud) linked below and check out Rattle Box’s page too!

December 9th

Every year in the weeks before Christmas there’s a nervous hustle and bustle in the streets. People just seem a bit off kilter. The weather gets uncomfortably cold, annoying music plays in all the stores, and everyone starts to maniacally look forward to the holidays. Yep, it’s the holidaze, and when it strikes no one is safe. We all have that one coworker who got overly sauced at the holiday party…or maybe that was you. If it wasn’t, it’s time to get into the spirit of things; this weekend should provide many outlets for you to do some merrymaking. Now, off we go.

If you’re in New York, Yelle is playing tonight along side Housse de Racket at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. If that got you excited, tomorrow is a duesy. HARD has teamed up with Mouth Taped Shut to present the Bloody Beetroots, James Murphy, and PROXY for free with RSVP, but as you may have guessed all tickets are accounted for. If you weren’t on your A game this time, not to worry. I suggest you dig a little deeper into the underground scene. Our good friends at It Gets You Off will be throwing yet another private party this weekend at 190 Mercer St. All of the usual suspects from the IGYO crew will be playing, as well as Clockwork, and a “very special guest.” With so many artists passing through New York this weekend, it could be anyone.

For all you Los Angelites, Modestep & Jam3s K3nn3dy will be playing the Music Box tomorrow night, and up in the Bay, they’ll playing the Regency Ball Room this evening. Also, worth mentioning for tonight is the Snow Globe pre-party at 103 Harriet where Big Gigantic, Tokimonster, and others will be melting faces. It’s the weekend. Get some.

Sub Focus – Falling Down ft. Kenzie May
Knife Party – Destroy Them With Lazers
Robotic Pirate Monkey – Pantone Polygamy
Bart B More & Rubix – Ari (Original Mix)
Afro Jack & Shermanology – Can’t Stop Me Now
Miike Snow – Devil’s Work

“OH. MY. GOSH.” That’s the only way I can describe the batch of tunes we’ve whipped up for you this week. After everything that went down this weekend you’re probably a bit sleep deprived and a little less rich in brain cells, but don’t fret. Now that you’re all tuckered out from listening to Friday’s playlist and doing God knows what else this weekend, we’re not just gonna’ leave ya’ hangin’. There’s medicine on the way to help you coast through your week. Music is What Feelings Sound Like #8!

November 30th

This week’s edition of Music is What Feelings Sound Like features tracks from Boards of Canada, Bombay Bicycle Club, Shlohmo, and more. As winter approaches and the days get shorter it’s easy to succumb to the darkness induced malaise that can come with late Fall. These tracks might give you just the pick me up you need. If you’re in a funk maybe you should quit fighting it. Go deeper down the rabbit hole with chopped and screwed gems from DJ Screw and Brodinsky as your guides. And if you listen to ASAP Rocky’s contribution this week, it’s clear even he’s been downing the Robitussin as of late. Relax, enjoy, and remember the holidays are coming.

Gardens & Villa – Orange Blossom
Youth Lagoon – Day Dream
Cold War Kids – I’ve Seen Enough
Crystal Fighters – Champion Sound
ASAP Rocky – Kissin’ Pink
Boards of Canada – Olson (Midland Edit)
